A new month calls for a fresh set of goals and goal planning to help you achieve them. I am definitely guilty of getting excited about a new month, setting a bunch of goals and then getting overwhelmed with how much I planned for myself.
After using journal prompts to set my goals for the month, I decided to use a goal planner to take my goal tracking more seriously. I wanted to find the absolute best goal setting tips that will help you not only set new goals, but to track your progress and stay motivated.
If you're looking for the best goal setting tips to help you achieve your goals, this post is for you! I've also included a goal planner freebie you can use for any month of the year!
Here are 7 simple goal setting tips to help you set and achieve your goals.
1. Reflect on the past month
Go over your habits, successes and any obstacles you faced over the last month. Write them all out and go over the habits that helped you get towards your goals. Then, reflect on the habits that didn't serve you and that you want to leave behind. This will give you something to look back on and keep track of when creating your goals.
2. Make a less of/more of list
Make a t-table and label the left side less of, and the right side more of. In the less of table, write down things you want to experience less of this month. This can be anything from situations, habits, friendships or actions that no longer serve you or make you feel good. On the right side, write down things you want more of this month.
I love this activity because it helps me focus on things I can work on letting go of, and things I want to prioritize and have more of in my life.
3. Write down your priorities & values
Before writing out your goals, write down what your top priorities are at the moment. Your goals should revolve around your priorities and values. Once you write these down, you'll have a clearer idea of what your goals will look like and focus on. Writing your priorities and values is setting the foundation down for your goals.
4. Write out your goals
Now, it's time to write out your goals. I like to write around 5 goals for myself for a month's time, so I don't overwhelm myself. Having too many goals can cloud your focus and leave you feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Simplify your goals and start with 3-5 goals this month, and see how it goes.
5. Create a strategy
After writing out your goals, create an action plan you can follow to reach those goals. As for as goal setting goes, this is an essential part you don't want to miss. It's easy to write down your goals, but putting in the work to reach them is a different story. By putting your plan down on paper, you can check in with it and track your progress as you move through the steps.
If one of my goals is to reach x amount of blog views per month, my strategy could look something like:
- Write & publish 4 blog posts a week
- Pin at least 2x a day
- Take blog course
6. Reflect on your habits
Are there any habits you have that could be getting in the way of you achieving your goals? Once you write out your goals and strategy, set aside time to think about your habits. Jot down any actions that potentially stop or limit you from reaching your goals.
Once you identify these habits and make a list, you'll be more conscious of actions you need to avoid to stay on track.
7. Set rewards for your goal milestones
I don't know about you, but I always work better when I have a reward set for my goals & milestones. Having a reward gives you something to work towards and to keep you motivated. A reward can be anything from an item, an outing or even a trip. Not every goal needs a reward, and you can also have rewards for milestones within your goals. This works for larger goals that take more time or difficult goals that you can break up into milestones.
8. Use a planner
Nothing will make you feel more like your life is together than a planner. I swear by yearly planners, goal planners, wellness planners- you name it, and I probably have one. You can also use printable planners to add to your notebook or binder. If you don't have a planner, you can use my free goal planner printable!
