1. Start journaling weekly
Journaling is one of the simplest practices you can start at any point in your self-care journey. It's proven to reduce stress and anxiety, and is a great way to release pent-up emotions. If you're in need of some journaling inspiration, start by using daily journal prompts or try a few reflective prompts to kickstart your practice.
2. Practice daily meditations
There are so many amazing meditations out there that are completely free to use. I love using morning meditations from YouTube, like this one from Lavendaire or if you have more time, Joe Dispenza's morning meditation is a must-do.
Meditation can be tricky to get into, but if you have guided videos or Spotify episodes to help, you'll soon fall in love with your daily meditation practice.
3. Spend time in the outdoors
This is a practice that is one of the most beneficial to your mental health, and one of the easiest to do. Take time out of your week to hike a trail or explore a forest. Fresh air can do wonders for your wellbeing and you don't have to go far to enjoy the benefits. If you can't venture off too far, head outside for a walk (without your headphones) and take in the outdoors.
4. Have a spa day at home
There's nothing quite as relaxing as an at-home spa day. Draw yourself a bath, pop in a bath bomb, and put on a soothing face mask for the ultimate pampering session. You can use this time to pamper your hair, skin, and body for some much-needed you time.
5. Read a book or watch your favorite movie
Indulge in one of your favorite books or movies for a night to yourself. Watch or read something that you love and brings you joy. This can be a series you love or a book that brings back feel-good, nostalgic memories.
6. Have a rest day
Self-care doesn't mean having to feel productive. Let go of any guilt that you should be doing something with your time and embrace some rest. Resting is an essential part of a productive routine, and will get you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
7. Call a friend or family member you love
You can never go wrong with calling someone in your life that uplifts you and makes you feel good. Call up someone you want to catch up with and who you always feel better after talking to. Staying in touch with family and friends will keep you feeling connected, and is a great way to find support if you need someone to talk to.
8. Do a social media clean up
Clean up your social media pages so that when you do use them, you won't feel worse than before you logged on. Unfollow or mute any profiles that don't make you feel good, or that no longer resonate with you.
I used to follow people out of fear that I would come off as rude for unfollowing them, but I realized if I don't ever see them in real life- it's completely understandable. Prioritize your mental health first and create a social media profile that makes you feel happy and inspired when on it.
9. Start a hobby for fun
In today's society, there's often pressure to monetize everything we do, from social media to hobbies we love- it can be overwhelming. Start a hobby that's completely for fun and reserved solely for yourself.
It's a lot more fun to do a hobby you enjoy without worrying about having to be successful, do a good job, or gain anything from it other than genuine joy. Try something you always wanted to do but never did and enjoy it!
10. Try out new recipes
Add a few new recipes to your roster to create something new in your kitchen. Cooking can be so therapeutic and trying new recipes is always exciting and refreshing. I love making new mocktails and dinner recipes when I want to change my weekly meals around.
11. Take a break from your phone
This is one that I know I can use and so many other people can too. It can be a struggle staying off your phone and if you find yourself mindlessly scrolling or spending hours on your phone, it could be time to take a break. Set a time before bed where you stop using your phone, or try a few phone-free weekends for a reset.
12. Write out your dreams and goals
If you're looking to get out of a slump, or simply want a boost of motivation, write out your goals and dreams in a notebook. Think about your biggest goals for the year ahead and for the next five years. These should inspire you and have you feeling excited for the future.
I practice jotting down what my dream life would look like in 5 years in my journal, then write out my goals and next steps to achieve that dream.
13. Practice gratitude
Whether you journal regularly or not, you can always practice gratitude wherever you are. Write out everything you're grateful for, especially on days where you feel down. Write down everyone in your life that you're thankful for, and all of the things that you may take for granted. This practice always lifts my mood and helps me see the blessings in my life no matter what kind of day I'm having.
