This blog post is all about sustainable living tips to add to your daily routine.
Trying to live a more eco-conscious lifestyle can be a challenge, especially if you don't know where to start. But, it's totally possible to make eco-conscious choices with simple changes to your daily routine. I used to think it would cost me way beyond my means to live more sustainably- but that's not true at all. In some cases, eco-friendly swaps are expensive and double, sometimes tripe the price of alternatives, which was what often stops me from choosing them. In this blog post, I'll be focusing on budget-friendly alternatives to get you started.
Whether you're just starting out on your eco-conscious journey or want to learn more, I've got you covered. If you're looking for ways you can make simple choices that are better for the planet, you've come to the right place! Here are simple tips for sustainable living you can do right now.
1. Support local farmers
Shopping locally is a simple change you can make in your every day routine that will alter the way you look at food. When you shop locally, you shop much more intentionally and take the time to consider what you're buying and whether you really need it.
When I first started shopping at a local grocery shop, I was terrified that I was going to break the bank every time I shopped. But, I never did. I was so conscious about what I was buying and planned my meals before each shop, so I always stayed within my budget!
2. Make simple swaps
There are so many small swaps you can make in your daily routine. When I first started to think about living a more sustainable lifestyle, I thought I had to make big changes and completely change my life around. Instead, I started with small changes that slowly built up over time to create a more sustainable lifestyle. Swap your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one, use a coffee tumbler for your morning drives to work, or use a heatless curling set instead of your curler.
3. Shop secondhand
Instead of shopping for something new, try shopping secondhand. Thrift and vintage stores are often stocked with a variety of goodies like clothing, accessories, home decor, and books, and if you're lucky you can find a hidden gem or two. You can also find a great bargain on Facebook Marketplace or in consignment stores.
4. Incorporate reusables
Once you switch over to using reusables, you'll wonder how you ever got by without them. There are so many affordable, convenient reusables you can add to your daily routine. Some of my favorites are coffee tumblers, reusable metal straws, and produce bags.
5. Shop ethical brands
Shop ethical brands that design their clothes with the environment in mind to feel good about the clothes you're in. There are plenty of ethical brands that use sustainable & regenerative fabrics, and ethically design their clothes. This is one of my favorite lists of ethical clothing brands to shop for women.
6. Phase out fast fashion
Fast fashion brands like Shein, H&M and Zara sell cheap, trendy pieces that often end up in landfills after a season or two. But, they're convenient, and not everyone has the budget to shop ethical brands. I'll be the first to admit that I've shopped at H&M and Zara, and really love some of their pieces. But - I do try to avoid them as much as I can when it comes to making more planet-friendly choices.
Fortunately, there are affordable brands out there that you can shop, like the list above that have super cute and stylish options. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day- so don't stress about having to cut off all fast fashion brands in one go. It takes time to research ethical brands that are affordable and match your style.
7. Support small businesses
Rather than supporting a large chain who more than likely doesn't prioritize sustainability, why not support small businesses that do?! There are endless amazingly talented small businesses out there that sell beautiful products you can't find anywhere else. Search your area for local artists and small-business owners to support.
8. Travel local
Rather than booking a flight to the next far-off destination, explore the local gems near your hometown. There are many hidden gems waiting to be found near where you live - sometimes it just time and effort finding the places worth visiting. I have found so many beautiful gems and places to explore near my home, from small towns to cabin getaways tucked away in the woods.
These are the best simple sustainable living tips to get you started on your eco-conscious journey. Do you have any eco-friendly tips that you practice?
