If you're new to journaling or just can't seem to establish a steady journaling routine, this post is for you. With fall approaching and school starting up again - it feels like the perfect time for a fresh start. To me, September is the mark of the start of a new year and I always feel so inspired with new ideas and plans.
It can be hard to make journaling apart of your weekly routine, especially if you're not a fan of writing or don't journal often. Whether you love journaling or have a love hate relationship, it takes time to create a consistent journaling routine.
As someone who loves to journal - I've created the ultimate journaling routine for you to follow and introduce into your weekly or daily routine.

1. Set a time in the day to journal
When you're first starting out with your journaling routine, it's essential to set a time in the day to journal that works for you. For me, I love journaling in the morning and always forget to journal before bed. I make a fresh cup of coffee, sit down and fill out my Five Minute Journal & bullet journal before starting the day. Find a time in the day where it's easy for you to set aside a few minutes in the day to journal.
2. Have a realistic weekly goal
Rather than trying to journal every single day of the week right off the bat, set a realistic goal for yourself. 2-3 times a week is a great starting point to introduce journaling into your weekly routine.
3. Use a guided journal
In the beginning, you might not always know what to write about or what journal prompts to use. It can be easier to start off with a guided journal like the Five Minute Journal, or one with prompts built into it. I absolutely love guided journals because I don't have to think of any writing ideas- they're all laid out for me. These are a few of my favourite guided journals I recommend
4. Use journal prompts
If you prefer using a bullet journal and want more freedom in your writing, journal prompts are the perfect solution. Try these simple daily journal prompts or these journal prompts for goal setting to get you started. They're simple, short, and can be done in a quick morning journal session. Make sure to always include manifestations in your journal prompts- which are the goals and desires you want to attract into your life.
5. Check in weekly with your progress
Use your Sunday as a weekly check in day to reflect on how your week went. Did you reach your journaling goals for the week? If not, write down what steps you'll take the upcoming week to reach your goals. Reflect on what's going well for you, and what might need changing. Doing a weekly check in will help you see what's working for you and what's not.
6. Do a mind dump
If journal prompts aren't working for you, try doing a mind dump. A mind dump is when you write out anything that's on your mind. It doesn't have to be cohesive or structured. The point of a mind dump is to dump out all of your thoughts on paper.
7. Don't be too hard on yourself
If you forget to journal or find your routine has slipped- don't be too hard on yourself! Even though I love to journal, I still have days and even weeks where I completely forget about it. When you don't feel like, instead of not doing it at all, try refreshing your routine.
I'll look out for new journaling prompts, change the time of day I journal, and sometimes, I'll buy a new journal. There's nothing that gets me more excited to write then a fresh new journal! I only do this if I have lost all interest to journal and have grown to dislike my old one.
8. Stack journaling with another habit
The book Atomic Habits talks all about stacking old habits with new habits and this idea has honestly changed my life. Take a habit you do every single day - like making your morning cup of coffee. Pair that habit with journaling. So, each morning when you brew a coffee, spend 10 minutes journaling while drinking your morning cup. Pairing a familiar habit with a new one is such a simple but effective way to introduce a new habit into your life.

9. Make sure you're having fun
When you're journaling, make sure that you're having fun too. Don't be too hard on yourself and take it too seriously. You'll have a much easier time creating a steady journaling routine if you genuinely enjoy doing it. Write about what makes you happy and brings you joy, and give yourself time to grow your journaling practice.
